How to Apply for a Federal Job
1
Create a USAJOBS account
Go to USAJOBS.gov and create a free account. You'll need to upload a resume in their format — the USAJOBS resume builder walks you through it.
2
Read the full announcement
Federal job announcements are detailed. Read the "Qualifications" section carefully — federal jobs use specific grade levels (GS-1 through GS-15) and you must meet the stated requirements to be considered.
3
Submit before the closing date
Federal job postings close at 11:59 PM Eastern time on the listed closing date. Late applications are not accepted. Apply early — the system can be slow near deadlines.
4
Complete the questionnaire
Most federal applications include a self-assessment questionnaire. Answer honestly — inflating your ratings can result in disqualification if you're selected for an interview.
5
Wait for a referral
Federal hiring takes longer than private-sector hiring — typically 4–8 weeks from closing date to first contact. You'll receive updates in your USAJOBS account.
