Internet on the Road: Starlink vs Hotspot vs Cell Booster for Van Life
A real comparison of Starlink, cellular hotspots, and cell boosters for van life and remote work. What each costs, where each works, and how to build a reliable internet setup.

The Limitations
Cellular hotspots do not work in true dead zones — national forest wilderness areas, remote BLM land, and large stretches of the rural West. If you are boondocking in the Escalante or the Owyhee Canyonlands, you will have no signal. For most van lifers who stay within 30 miles of a town, cellular is sufficient. For serious boondockers, you need Starlink.
Option 2: Cell Signal Boosters — Extending What You Have
A cell signal booster amplifies the existing cellular signal in your area. It does not create signal where there is none — it takes a weak signal and makes it usable. The Power Requirement
The Starlink dish draws 50–75W while in use. Running it for 8 hours a day requires 400–600Wh of battery capacity just for the dish. Is Starlink Worth It?
